PICNIC AT HANGING ROCK **
Peter Weir
1975
IDEA: A group of female students inexplicably disappear at a mysterious rock location.
BLURB: Effective atmospherics and an eerie, unsettling aura are salvaged in a tepid film that never truly finds its power. The very surreal and feverish lucidity of the early scenes at the rock have some of the sinister mystery the film seems to be going for, but as the film goes on that ambiance fails to withhold, and so does the viewer’s interest. Bland characters and a sense of stagnancy add up to an underwhelming experience.
